For me if you stripped down the best 12 tracks on Disc 2 you have a far superior record to Fish but I suppose Colin was being true to his vision of the time. For that, as wilful as it may have seemed at the time, you have to admire the man. Newmans second 4AD offering was the far more accessible Not To. The Colin Newman reissues are simply AMAZING The music has never sounded better and the BONUS disc of demo recordings and outtakes are jaw dropping. The bonus disc alone is worth the price of admission. This short little album is not Provisionally Entitled The Singing FishNot To. No, this is CN1, an EP bonus-disc that came with just the first few thousand copies of Colin Newman's Provisionally Entitled The Singing FishNot To. It is therefore, rare. Very rare. Newman's second LP, the entirely instrumental Provisionally Entitled The Singing Fish, in which all the tracks were titled for numbered fish, was released on the 4AD Records label in 1981. A third LP, Not To, which along with original compositions reworked a number of tracks originally written for Wire, was released in 1982 on 4AD. A massive change in style for Newman, the album is reflective and highly orchestrated. His next LP, It Seems, followed a similar path, albeit with far more use of sequencers something Newman would continue to work with for a number of years
