Brutal, demonic vocals, guitars tuned down to C before it was cool, high-in-the-mix drums, and growling bass. Hard to think of another DM album that has aged as well as this. Favorite track: Deliverance of Horrific Prophecies. Onward to Golgotha is the debut studio album by the American death metal band Incantation. The album was released in 1992 on Relapse Records. It was re-released in October 2006 with a bonus DVD of live performances. To celebrate being added to the hall of fame it will be re-released on 180 gram vinyl, but limited to only 1,000 copies. Not in the sense that its particularly lengthy or emotional but that it is just flat-out heavy, with muffled riffs that make for impressive fodder on which the sheer power of this album just piles up. The sporadic, almost random guitar solos tear away from the mash of distorted chords and chugging rhythms and usher in a sense of chaotic urgency which often makes its way back into the verse riffs. I need not comment on the album, as it is one of the best and arguably most influential, at least for current bands, death metal albums of all time. Essential listening for anyone interested in the genre.

The DVD on the other hand is not so great. The first show is the most listenable, and even that is mediocre bootleg quality. Metallica may be able to get away with a sound like this in Cliff 'em All, but Incantation is must faster, heavier and lower-tuned, resulting very often in an indecipherable wall of noise. The other shows are plain unlistenable, you can't tell what's playing most of the time. So the DVD only serves the historical purpose of giving us a glimpse of the band onstage in their early years.

The problem is the only other DVD they've released so far, the bonus disc on Primordial Domination, isn't much better either. Incantation owe their fans -not to mention deserve to have- a proper DVD, with great sound, many songs and probably a documentary of the band's history.

Until then, we'll have to make do with these DVDs, YouTube videos -some of which are better quality that the former- and, the luckiest of us, the chance to see them live every now and again (still waiting for the day).
