In the 'holy year' of 1725, the most famous flautist of his time, J. Quantz, visited Naples. He inspired a host of sonatas and concertos by the great. Album 2012 23 Songs. Improvisation Upon the Partite 'Follia di Spagna'. By Alessandro Scarlatti - Maurice Steger & Instrumental Ensemble. Sinfonia in A Minor. By Fiorenza Nicola - Maurice Steger & Instrumental Ensemble. Vivaldi: Concerti per flauto. Telemann: Blockflöten-Werke Suites & Concerto pour flûte à bec et orchestre. The highlight of the album is the Improvisation upon Alessandro Scarlatti's Partite 'Follia di Spagna,' track 5, which goes into spectacular difficulties for both Steger and the other players in his small ensemble. This appears to be a unique animal in itself - an improvisation on a work by Scarlatti that was itself a work based on semi-improvisatory practice, and it's really very exciting - not only for Steger's agility and his variety of tonguings, but for the shifting textures of the ensemble. Maurice Steger, wonder of the recorder, directs an eminently authentic and exciting ensemble in a series of lovely compositions from that collection in Una Follia di Napoli Harmonia Mundi which is out this month. There are works by Alessandro Scarlatti, Domenico Scarlatti, Leonardo Leo, Francesco Mancini, Francesco Barbella, Nicola Fiorenza and Domenico Sarro, perhaps not all familiar to us today, but solid baroque craftsmen-artists all, writing music of great verve. The harmonia mundi recording of Schumann's violin concerto with Isabelle Faust, the Freiburger Barockorchester and Pablo Heras-Casado received an ECHO Klassik for the Concert Recording of the Year . Recorder virtuoso Steger captures the intense piety and sensuality of Baroque Naples in music drawn largely from a 1725 manuscript. This was the year of Alessandro Scarlatti's death his Improvisation upon the Partite Follia di Spagna is included and the year flautist J J Quantz inspired a generation of Neapolitan composers. Steger strikes a delicate balance between technical dazzle and deep musicality, accompanied by a hand-picked ensemble. Independent culture newsletter.
