Album

Milestones CL 1193 is a studio album by American jazz trumpeter and composer Miles Davis, recorded with his first great quintet augmented as a sextet. It was released in 1958 by Columbia Records. Tenor saxophonist John Coltrane's return to Davis' group in 1958 coincided with the modal phase albums: Milestones and Kind of Blue 1959 are both considered essential examples of 1950s modern jazz. Davis at this point was experimenting with modes scale patterns other than major and minor. Milestones - Miles Davis. The album's closer is Monk's Straight, No Chaser, which became a signature tune for the sextet even when Garland and Jones left to be replaced by Bill Evans and Jimmy Cobb, and later Evans by Wynton Kelly. It is renowned for including Miles' first forays into the developing modal jazz experiments, as noticed on the piece Milestones not to be confused with Miles, recorded by Davis in 1948, which would be followed to its logical conclusion on Kind of Blue. It was also the last time the rhythm section of Jones, Garland and Chambers would ever play with Miles on record. Besides Davis himself, the featured players were Red Garland on piano replaced on Kind of Blue by the incomparable Bill Evans, Paul Chambers on bass, Philly Joe Jones on drums who also left the sextet before Kind of Blue, replaced by Jimmy Cobb, and most importantly, the dual saxophonists Julian Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane.
