Album

The Grand Theatre, Volume One is the title of the eighth studio album from alternative countryrock band the Old 97's, released on October 12, 2010. The band took up a week-long residency at Sons of Hermann Hall in Dallas, Texas, simulating the concert experience to test out new material. The songs which the band felt worked were then taken to Treefort Studios in Austin, Texas, for proper recording. Over two dozen songs were recorded during these sessions. The remaining material was released as The. The Grand Theatre Vol. 2 - Old 97's. More than 15 years in, the Old 97's haven't lost a step. Concerned about releasing a double-disc set, The Grand Theatre Volume One anticipates its spring companion Volume Two as frisky as ever, mixing a Clash clamor with a two-step beat and gently exploring relationships real and imagined. The last couple 97's discs were perhaps negatively affected by frontman and principal songwriter Rhett Miller's burgeoning solo career, but here he seems doubly inspired, and the band charges alongside, particularly Ken Bethea, whose guitar play remains snaky and evocative. Written primarily by front man Rhett Miller while on tour in the UK, Miller offers up his wry character studies and charming twists on phrases. The 97's sound is expertly rounded out by band members: Murry Hammond, Ken Bethea and Philip Peeples. Together as a band they've delivered an album that will rock America from coast to coast. Chart Stats. I think this is the best Old 97s album since Satellite Rides. The band sounds more energized than they have in years. There's fun, tuneful stuff here, though the lyrics are under par. Nevertheless, I was still eagerly awaiting the release of The Grand Theatre, Volume One. I'm happy to say, after a few listens, I think this might be the band's best effort since 2001's Satellite Rides. Recorded live without an audience at Dallas's Sons of Hermann Hall, this album rocks in a Too Far To Care-ish kind of way
